DSU Spotlight: Prince Charles Hospital, Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board

Meet the Welsh day surgery team whose resilience, teamwork and positivity have helped shape a new chapter for their service. Back

DSU Spotlight Welsh Health Board

As DSU Senior Sister Martine Lawrence explains:

"Following a year of being moved throughout the hospital and DSU services being disjointed, we finally moved into our forever home in May 2025."

The new 23-trolley Day Surgery Unit includes admission, discharge and local anaesthetic areas, enabling the team to work in line with the GIRFT model.

The move has provided opportunities to introduce new services, including Day Case Hysterectomy and a designated ambulatory trauma list.

"Both services have gone extremely well and patient feedback has been positive, reminding us of the reason for pushing DSU services."

The team's resilience and dedication throughout this period have been hugely appreciated.

"I would like to say a big thank you to my amazing staff for keeping us going through difficult times. Also, my deputies Jade Jones and Katie Kwiecinski, who have kept the unit running in my absence throughout last year."

Looking ahead, there's plenty to be positive about:

"We are positive about the future, and I am sure we will continue to keep improving and expanding services to protect our amazing unit."
